“I wanted a place where I could have fun with other adoptees, but not have to talk about adoption all the time…” -Davon, 12
The STAR (Strong, Tough and Resilient) program is a celebration of the adoptee experience. We know that being with others of a shared identity is powerful! Through group mentorship, participants have an opportunity to form a healthy adoptee identity. Through monthly STAR activities, youth adoptees find support, guidance, and friendship of others. Amara STAR is part of the Amara Post-Adoption Program
Adult Adoptees – become a mentor
Are you an adoptee? Do you want to support adopted youth? Do you live in the Seattle or Tacoma area? Are you are over 21 years old? Can you commit to 6 hours per month for one-year? If so, please apply!
Adopted Youth – become a STAR
Are you an adoptee? Would you like to meet other adoptees? Are you at least 10 years old? Do you enjoy activities like sports, arts & crafts, cooking, going to a movie, participating in a flash mob, attending a concert or volunteering? If so, join us!
For Parents – your involvement
Adoptive parents of youth will be offered a support group with other parents during mentorship outings. Amara’s Family Support Specialist will encourage adoption-specific discussions and networking opportunities for parents to build a community.
Frequently Asked Questions
We desire to build programming that will not cost families any money out of pocket. If there is a cost for an official activity this will be made known prior to the outing. Participants are encouraged to connect outside of official STAR outings if they desire, and any related costs are the responsibility of the participants.
Families will be asked to drop off and pick up at the location of each outing. Mentors will not drive mentees.
