As an open and affirming foster care organization, we are proud to work with all families inclusive of sexual orientation, gender identity, and marital status. We welcome and actively seek families of all gender expressions, identities and sexual orientations.
Amara was one of the first agencies in the country to work with gay and lesbian couples.
Today, approximately 25% of the families we work with identify as LGBTQ+.

HRC – All Children, All Families recognition
We are honored to have been recognized by the Human Rights Campaign’s All Children – All Families program every year since 2013. All Children – All Families promotes LGBTQ-inclusive policies and affirming practices among child welfare agencies. We are proud to be considered among HRC’s agencies that lead the field with innovative approaches to inclusion!
Workshops + Support Groups:
LGBTQ+ Community Foster Care Information Meetings
We work with LGBTQ+ partner organizations including Gay City in Seattle and the Rainbow Center in Tacoma to encourage the LGBTQ+ community to learn about and consider becoming foster parents in a safe and comfortable environment.
These Amara Information Meetings happen each month at various community locations, including the partners mentioned above. Learn more about AIM and when the next meeting is below!
Supporting LGBTQ+ Youth in Foster Care Worskshop
We are excited to present our Supporting LGBTQ+ Youth in Care Workshop! This workshop is designed for caregivers to learn more about creating a safe and affirming environment for LGBTQ+ youth in their homes. Join us for an upcoming Supporting LGBTQ+ Youth in Care workshop:
LGBTQ+ Parent Support Group
This parent support group is for LGBTQ+ foster parents/families who have adopted from foster care. It’s open to both Amara and non-Amara families and is a time to create community and connect with other LGBTQ families . Each session is facilitated by two local community members who are part of the community.
LGBTQ+ Parent Workshop
Our LGBTQ+ Parent Workshop provides a safe place for LGBTQ couples and single people who are pursuing fostering and/or adoption to explore ways in which LGBTQ+ families are wonderful and unique; as well as to focus on how to prepare for challenges during the process into parenthood. See our Upcoming Workshops for more information!
