Become a Volunteer

Volunteers make a lasting difference

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Amara!

You can make a profound impact on the lives of our community’s children. Amara offers a variety of different volunteer opportunities and we are dedicated to providing child-focused training and ongoing support to help you feel confident in your role.

Due to the sensitive nature of our work, we ask that all regular Amara volunteers go through our application and screening process. Our volunteer manager is always available to help guide you through it.

Learn more about volunteering with Amara: Amara holds regular Volunteer Information Meetings (VIM), required for new volunteers. You’ll learn more about our programs, how volunteers make an impact for Amara’s kids and families, and how to become an Amara volunteer.

Volunteer Opportunities

We offer a variety of volunteer positions. However our greatest need is for volunteers to help staff our Emergency Sanctuaries (Seattle & Tacoma). See below for more information on becoming a Sanctuary Volunteer.

We depend on volunteers to help care for kids in our Emergency Sanctuary Program. We ask Emergency Sanctuary Volunteers to commit to at least one volunteer shift per month.

Volunteers in our sanctuary program offer comfort and security to kids by:

  • Playing at the park
  • Making pancakes
  • Visiting the zoo

All volunteers are provided with extensive training and are supported by onsite staff.

We operate two locations: Our Grandese’s Place sanctuary is located in Seattle, and our Pierce County Sanctuary in Tacoma. Attend a Volunteer Information Meeting to learn more about getting involved.

Childcare volunteers care for kids while their families attend meetings, support groups, and other events and also help with set up and clean up.

We ask Childcare volunteers to commit to a regular, ongoing volunteer schedule. Attend a Volunteer Information Meeting to learn more about getting involved.

The STAR (Strong, Tough and Resilient) program is a celebration of the adoptee experience. The group mentoring model creates a supportive and affirming place to explore identity with those of similar backgrounds and experiences while having fun and developing relationships that can last a lifetime.

If you are an adoptee, live in the Seattle/Tacoma area, are over age 21, and want to support adopted  youth, becoming a STAR mentor may be just right for you.

Administrative Support volunteers fill a variety of roles that help Amara continue to offer professional, high quality services. Individual volunteers interested in longer term commitments will be trained to take on more complex tasks.

Please contact our Volunteer Manager at to learn more about this opportunity.

Amara offers a variety of different internship experiences to help you learn more about nonprofit operations, client services, donor relations, communications, event planning, and more.

Please contact our Volunteer Manager at to learn more about this opportunity.

Amara offers intermittent projects for groups of any size. While group volunteers do not work directly with children, they make a huge impact on our ability to support these incredible kids! Please contact us at org to learn more.
