A Child-Focused Mission

A promise to kids in foster care.

Every day, adults make promises to kids:

We’ll keep you safe. Things will get better. It will be okay.

At Amara, we strive to keep those promises.

There are nearly 9,000 kids in foster care on any given day in Washington State due to circumstances beyond the child’s control.

One in every four kids is moved 5 or more times while in foster care.

Experts estimate that every time a child changes schools due to a change in foster care placement, they lose nearly 6 months of academic progress.

Over 400 kids in Washington age out of foster care each year without a forever family. Within a year, nearly a quarter of these teens are homeless.1

These kids are our responsibility.

When kids enter the foster care system, they become the responsibility of the community. It is up to us—all of us—to keep them safe, to provide for their emotional and physical well-being, to make sure that everything will be okay.

Amara is committed to doing what must be done to uphold our promises to kids in foster care.

Their well-being is our mission:

Amara works to ensure that every child in foster care has the love and support of a committed family – as quickly as possible, and for as long as each child needs.

A Journey of Love

Our work is symbolized by our 100-foot outdoor mural, A Journey of Love, which follows the adventures of four children on their passage to safety and love. We invite our community, children, and families to come take a closer look at the mural, located at our offices on Martin Luther King Jr. Way South, and discover the inspiring stories within this work of art.
